SHEET METAL

TYPES OF SHEETS AND PROPERTY (MECHANICAL)

MILD STEEL
Mild steel or medium carbon steel carbon percentage of 0.2% to 0.5%.
MELTING POINT 2600*C

  • HRCA:- HRCA stands of hot rolled close annealed steel. The sheet is rolled above the recrystallization temperature of steel.
HRCA sheet has a coarse finish.
Rough surface.
Less mechanical strength.

  • CRCA:-  CRCA stands for cold rolled close annealed steel. The sheet is rolled below the recrystallization temperature of steel. The major difference between HRCA and CRCA is that in CRCA sheets oil is applied.

The CRCA  sheets have good strength.
Weight is high.
Low corrosion resistant.
Weldability is good.

 GALVANIZED IRON

G.I. sheets are Zinc coated. Zn improves corrosion-resistant. When the zinc coating is applied to metal it increases life.

 Strength is good.
 Weight is high.
 High corrosion-resistant.

ALUMINIUM
It is the second most widely used metal because of
Lightweight.
Good strength.
Good weldability.
Low weight.
MELTING POINT 660*C

 STAINLESS STEEL
Stainless steel contains chromium more than 10.5%. Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant.
Stainless steel has
high strength
Very good weldability.
cost is high.

 CALCULATION OF WEIGHT OF SHEET

VOLUME OF SHEET = Length x Breadth x Thickness of sheet
WEIGHT OF SHEET = Volume x Density of material

EXAMPLE
SIZE 1250 x 25000 x 2 mm
MATERIAL MILD STEEL

VOLUME OF SHEET =   L x B x T
                                      =  1.250 x 2.5 x 0.002      (mm is converted mts)
                                      =   0.00625 m3
DENSITY OF MILD STEEL =  7850 kg/m3

WEIGHT OF SHEET = 0.00625 x 7850
                                    = 49.0625

Similarly, we can calculate the weight sheet having a different size.

 UNIT

  •  1 mtr  = 1000 mm
  •  1 mtr  = 100 cm
  •  1 mtr  = 39.37 inch
  •  1 mtr  = 3.28 feet

  •  1 feet = 12 inch
  •  1 inch = 2.54 cm
  •  1 inch = 25.4 mm

  • 1 cm = 10 mm
  • 1 mm = 1000 micron

  • 1 soot = 3mm
 UNIT IN INCREASING ORDER

 MILIMETER < CENTIMETER < INCH< FEET<METER
